Video 15 minutes: FASHION SHOW
World-renowned designer for her own apparel house, Comme des Garçons, Rei KAWAKUBO has been a major force in the fashion world since the early 1970’s. Her work has been featured in exhibitions around the world ever since. Along with Yohji YAMAMOTO and Jurgen LEHL, she was part of the now legendary 1982 fashion “revolution” by Japanese designers in Paris, that contradicted traditional western fashion concepts with a fresh Asian sensibility, effecting international fashion ever since.
Kawakubo’s clothes are referred to as anti-fashion, and include deconstructed garments that sometimes intentionally omit basic elements, such as a sleeve, for example. Austerity is further achieved by her most commonly used color palette: black, grey and white.
